Kakyoung Lee’s “Family Portrait”

This 2009 animation by Kakyoung Lee was composited from 157 drypoint prints, revised and revised again. This laborious process is incongruous with the subject: a brief glimpse of a small moment in the daily life of a family. But the repetitive nature of the printing process is echoed by the repetitive nature of the audio, which makes the family seem trapped in time: “Here we go…Stand still…stand still…Stand still please… OK, everyone stand still… come on… Ok, that’s it, everyone’s good, come on… stand still please…”

Lee’s current exhibition at Ryan Lee Gallery runs through December 23, 2015.
